On the way back home from Italy, I swung through London to catch up with my friends at Oakley who have just opened their Oakley In Residence space. After a quick tour of the locale and a brief meet and greet with a few athletes, Chas from MASH and I convinced multi-Olympic gold medalist Victoria Pendleton to step outside and take a #HardstyleWednesday photo.

Komorebi is the Japanese word for sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees. That doppled light that kisses the forest floor. This was the inspiration for Breadwinner’s newest model, a rigid 29’r bikepacking rig. The Komorebi was built with expedition in mind. Self-supported, multi-day trips into the wilderness.
The Komorebi evolved from their classic 29r but is built with a rigid segmented fork made by Chris Igleheart with braze ons for anything you can imagine. The frame can easily handle frame bags, 3 water bottles and has eyelets for fenders and rear racks. Fitting tires up to 2.5” wide and optimized for comfortable swept bar bars but able to fit wider drop bars if you choose, the Komorebi is ready for anything.

I love seeing brands working together for a greater good. Machines for Freedom and Mission Workshop are bringing a series of events and rides to San Francisco, beginning May 14th as a two-week long celebration of the female cyclist.
These Girls are Machines will feature a pop-up shop by women’s cycling brand Machines For Freedom, an art gallery presented by Fast Chance Collective showcasing pieces by five local women artists and cyclists, and many other events and group rides designed to help carve out a space for women riders in the Bay Area.

Juliet did a nice feature on Caren Hartley of Hartley Cycles in the UK over at the Brooks England Blog. She was the first and only builder at Bespoke, which is an achievement in it of itself, yet from the looks of her work, she deserves that award for Best Utility Bike!

Last Saturday was the 2015 Red Hook Crit Brooklyn and racers from all over traveled to NYC to take a stab at victory, or at least finishing in the main group. With the days getting longer, the sun staying hotter and miles being put down on the road, Tenspeed Hero is welcoming the season change with a whole lotta new offerings in their lineup. When you ride a 44cm cyclocross bike, there aren’t many options out there. In fact, a lot of riders will opt for a 26″ mountain frame, which limits tire selections for ‘cross. For Lori, she wanted a cyclocross frame that would fit a fat tire and most importantly, fit her, while keeping true to the 700c wheel.
Builder Nao Tomii of Tomii Cycles wanted to take advantage of the extreme sloping top tube by making this cross bike look like a drop bar 29r mountain bike. Since a lot of people prefer their cross frames a bit smaller than their road frames, this one comes in a tad under 44cm. With 150mm Rotor cranks and Shimano Ultegra hydro disc brakes, Lori has absolute control over her bike. In fact, she’s already started riding trails on it here in Austin.
Personally, this is where custom frames triumph and when they look this good, who can argue with that? Check out this testimonial on Lori’s Instagram account.
Props to the mechanics at Mellow Johnny’s for building such a stellar rig for Lori and a huge high five goes to Nao at Tomii Cycles for building such a rad frame.
Lauren and I have done plenty of camping and she’s done her share of cycling around town, but we’ve never gone on a bicycle camping trip together. Yesterday morning, I was surprised to hear her ask if I wanted to get in some tent time before I headed out on the road again on Friday.
So last night, I packed up some bags, a tent, my trusty Lodge cast iron skillet and food for two meals. We headed out to the closest state park in the area: McKinney Falls. The route there is pretty easy, even loaded down with a bunch of gourmet food, wine, a hatchet and a skillet. I took it slow and coached Lauren through the climbs, we stopped for photos and tried our best to ignore the impatient rush-hour traffic zipping past. The weather looked nice, with bright blue sunny skies. It didn’t rain this go-round, but it was still quite enjoyable…

These clinics are setup for various skill levels and are meant to be extremely non-intimidating.

Mo, or “Meaux”, Bruno Roy was at the 2015 Cyclocross Nationals here in Austin, where I shot her Mudhoney Pro cross bike. Then, with all the madness that ensued after the postponement of the main event, I totally blanked on posting the photos.
That is until the news yesterday that Mo had retired from professional cyclocross racing. While she won’t be hanging up cross racing all together, her days of UCI events have come to a close. Now, I’ve only met Mo once but she seems like the type of person who is riding bikes for the love of the sport. Her and her husband Matt were so kind and generous, I can’t see her disappearing from their local New England scene. What I’m saying is, I doubt this is the last time you’ll be seeing this bike!

While the Rouge Roubaix and coincidentally, the Rouge Roubaix Builder Challenge were both huge successes this year, there were a few things that I felt needed recognition. These can best be broken into a few groups: Chris Diminno’s hard work keeping us all fed, Mosaic’s team of ladies that crushed it, Will Jones’ dedication to the safety of racers and last but not least, the vernacular found in the Deep South.
I’m stoked to see this video from All-City hit the ‘net today. Give it a watch as it highlights Team Koochella at the NSC Velodrome in Minneapolis.
