The Radavist 2019 Calendar: April

This is the fourth layout of the Radavist 2019 Calendar, entitled “Sleeping Rainbow” shot with a Canon 1DX and a 70-200mm lens in Fruita, Utah.

“The Waterpocket Fold is the defining geological feature in Capitol Reef National Park. This 100-mile long buckle in the earth’s crust runs from the north, around Hanksville, all the way South, to Bullfrog on Lake Powell. Along this Fold, rocks have been pushed upward and erosion has cut through the layers, creating deep narrow canyons and dynamic vistas. Capitol Reef got its name due to the unique formations resembling Neoclassical architecture found within the United States’ capitol buildings. Kinda shitty huh? Especially compared to the indigenous tribes’ name for the Reef, Sleeping Rainbow. Last week, we embarked on a ride through this incredible zone with Machines for Freedom. Our full-length post is following this month.”

We’re in Utah with Machines for Freedom

This weekend, we’re going to be taking on a ride I’ve wanted to document for some time with a badass group of ladies for Machines for Freedom. We’ll be updating our Instagram accounts along the way and as always, a big gallery will follow shortly. In the interim, give Machines for Freedom a follow on Instagram and if you don’t follow the Radavist on Instagram.

You might be wondering, out of all the gravel events popping up around the world, what makes the Land Run 100 special? Why ride gravel in Oklahoma, in a place known as “Tornado Alley”? If you are wondering this, you are not alone.

Last week, I had the opportunity to participate in my first Land Run 100 gravel race. Bobby and Crystal Wintle host the event from their shop, District Bicycles, in the center of historic downtown Stillwater, Oklahoma. The race attracts two thousand gravel cyclists from around the country and has some legendary stories attached to it. For instance, in 2017 rain soaked the red dirt roads to the consistency of peanut butter mud and only ~25% of the riders who started the race finished. Despite the treacherous conditions that bad weather can bring on race day, the Land Run 100 has established itself as a must-do event on the gravel race circuit. Before I talk about why I think that is and what I learned from my experience there, I’d like to acknowledge the history behind the name of the event.

Gravel Tryhard the Lady Bicycle Prankster

Never one to deny myself a good chuckle on Instagram, I’ve recently found the account of @Gravel_Tryhard where the self-proclaimed “Lady Bicycle Prankster” mocks classic examples of women, mostly models, used to market bicycles. As you can imagine, her material is endless and so far, it’s ceased to amaze me at how far she’ll go to get a good laugh. See for yourself on Instagram.

WTF Bikexplorers: SJ Brooks Bikexplorers Scholarships

The WTF Bikexplorers have pulled together SJ Brooks Bikexplorers Scholarships for this year’s Summit. Here are the details:

We would like to recognize the WTF community & our allies who donated to the SJ Brooks Bikexplorers Scholarship last year. Thanks to these generous donations we are able to fund five individual scholarships to attend the 2019 WTF Bikexplorers Summit.

The second WTF Bikexplorers Summit will include four days of clinics, rides, discussions, campfires, and gear testing in Vernonia, OR. Our goal for this year’s Summit is to connect, celebrate and support the growing community of WTFnB cyclists who use their bicycles to explore the world in a way that feels empowering and healing. With these scholarships we hope to support those members of our community who encounter the structural inequalities that can get in the way of getting outside and exploring the world by bike.

We recognize that living the bike life isn’t as free and easy as the internet makes it seem. In an effort to make the Summit as diverse as the world we live we’re offering scholarships for FIVE folks who identify as women, trans, femme, and/or non-binary to attend this year’s summit.

Apply at WTF Bikexplorers!

Help Support the WTF Bikexplorers

Our friends at the WTF Bikexplorers are holding a fundraiser to help kick off their 2019:

“WTF Bikexplorers is building a movement for more gender inclusivity within bicycle adventure travel by facilitating spaces to connect and grow our community. We are 100% Women, Transgender, Femme, Non-Binary and Genderqueer gravel grinders, mountain bikers, bikepackers, day-ride explorers, long-distance road riders, bicycle tourers, backpackers converting to bikepacking, and individuals looking to incorporate camping with biking.

We are seeking support from our allies within the cycling and adventure travel industry to help make our 2019 Summit a resounding success. Specifically, we are raising $20,000 to ensure that we can lower the ticket cost for WTF Bikexplorers in your community. While the amount may seem significant, we know first hand the impact that can be made when we work together!

If our mission is the future you also want to see it realized, we invite you to please consider making a donation. The WTF Bikexplorers are grateful for whatever level of support you can offer  – no donation is too small to make a difference! For donations of $500 or greater, we will include your business name, link on our website, and a shout out on social media (Instagram and Facebook). You will also receive a “We Support WTF Bikexplorers” decal for your business.”

Donations are kindly requested by April 1st.

We kicked off the cyclocross portion of Squid World Tour early again this year in August. After a successful weekend of UCI racing Down Under in Melbourne’s winter cyclocross conditions, we made our way up (way up) to Beijing, China for the 6th Edition of the always hot and muggy Qiansen Trophy Cup. In the past the majority of the races have been held in the outer rings of the capital city. This edition, however, the events would be held at all new venues outside (way outside) Beijing. The Squad was excited for all new courses, new roads, and a whole new Chinese adventure.

Pepper Cook Was Interviewed by Surly

Our friend Pepper Cook was recently interviewed by Surly!

Favorite bike-related memory.
I don’t have one specific bike memory, but I think my favourite thing on a bike ever is when you ride in Autumn and it’s flannel weather and the sun does that thing where it shines through the tree branches all dappled and you get to ride over a thick carpet of fallen leaves. You can hear the quiet crunching of the different coloured leaves and it’s cool enough outside where you don’t get sweaty. It feels like you’re riding in a time machine that got stuck on pause, or like you’re the last person on earth and you’ll never have to hurry anywhere ever again.

Pepper works with getting kids into bikepacking, has a warm and positive attitude and makes even the most miserable, or Type 02 fun trips look fun. Head on over to Surly to read more!

gronk – Urban Dictionary

Australian Slang, (noun) A person that is totally lacking in fashion sense, motor skills and/or social skills. Usually a total moron, an extremely unpleasant person or an unwanted guest.

Sometimes: A likable idiot or Bogan (especially in Queensland)

1. No wonder he can’t get a girlfriend, he is such a gronk

2. Why would you “steal my car for the weekend,” you gronk!

The Jagungal Wilderness is my favorite place to take guests in Australia. Come to Australia for sun and sand? Too bad…I will give you a historically inaccurate tour of the Australian Snowy Mountains in late springtime. Where it may or may not snow, hail or cook you.
