Leo Rodgers Meets Julian Molina and Fundraiser for Leo’s Recovery
It doesn’t take long to understand why Leo Rodgers is such an inspirational figure in the cycling world, and beyond. After losing his leg to a motorcycle accident nearly a decade ago, Leo found bicycles as a positive outlet and has been spreading good vibes in communities across the world ever since. He’s always cracking jokes and makes riding bikes look the most fun you’ll ever have. Leo was excited about the upcoming release of his most recent collaboration project with BMXer Julian Molina when, the week before Christmas, he was involved in another accident that resulted in a broken neck and paralysis. Continue reading below for a recap of Leo and Julian’s project by James Luedde, video by Stew Johnson, and Jeff Zielinski‘s excellent photoset. There’s also a link to a fundraiser, which will help support Leo and his family during these difficult and uncertain times.

Vans Looks to its Legacy with the BMX Checkerboard Pack
Vans is sitting on a 40-year legacy in action sports and that gives its designers a lot to look to for inspiration. This includes colorways first worn and sported by its own BMX team riders in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. The BMX Checkerboard pack highlights the Era and Sk8-Hi, which are each outfitted in a two-tone color scheme and checkerboard printed sidewalls. These two models include throwback color references to the inception of the BMX and skate scene.
Look for the BMX Checkerboard Pack in June online at Vans and in select retailers.

Ride Along: Hanson Little and His Dodge Sportsmobile
Leaving your nest ain’t easy, especially when your home town has been good to you. Hanson Little used to be a pro BMX rider – on paper – he still rips and takes trips from time to time, but his days of going big are limited by past injuries and the desire to keep on the bike, not healing off it.
Recently, Hanson bought a van and sold all of his belongings, save for a few bicycles. He plans on spending a great deal of time on the road over the next few months, but before he left town, I met up with him and shot some photos of his new mobile digs.
This weekend, I sent over some interview questions, which he promptly replied to… check them out below in a special Ride Along!

Outlier and Vans
This one came way out of left field but it looks great! Outlier and Vans collaborated on the Submarine Bedford sneaker:
“One of the dirty little secrets behind Outlier is just how committed we are to delivering value to our customers. We love working with the best materials (which are often very expensive) so it’s not always obvious, but we’re always pushing to deliver incredible quality at the best possible price. So when we got an opportunity to work with Vans on a shoe… well damn, not only did a lot of us grow up wearing Vans, but it was also a chance to make a great shoe at a really accessible price, so we didn’t hesitate.
Outlier meets Vans, the Supermarine Bedford. Water resistant Supermarine Cotton®, stainless steel hardware, pigskin cupped insoles, and of course a Vans OTW vulcanized waffle sole. $90. Available now.

Vans and Haro
Oh man, this new project from Vans looks RAD!
“Vans joins forces with renowned BMX brand Haro to commemorate a history of classic BMX design and originality. The fated partnership between the two brands brings forth a memorable collection of Vans x Haro footwear, apparel and accessories influenced by the early days of BMX style and the birth of the first freestyle BMX frame, the Haro Freestyler.
With more than 30 years of innovation, Haro Bikes champions an iconic heritage in BMX product design. With the introduction of its first top-of-the-line Freestyle BMX bike in early 1984, Haro ignited a revolution in the growing sport of Freestyle, paving the way for radical tricks and inventive style. The partnership between Vans and Haro celebrates a strong dedication to BMX.
The original Haro Freestyler Master informs the Vans capsule with vintage Haro accents and signature color schemes straight from the bike frame. Once worn by freestyle BMX riders in the 80s, the original Vans Era and Sk8-Hi Reissue boasts Vans’ classic checkerboard print popular among BMX athletes, along with Haro’s signature green and blue colors taken directly from theFreestyler Master. The collection also includes a retro long sleeve t-shirt and racing pant emblazoned with the unforgettable blue, green, and white racing stripes. Two custom Vans x Haro logo tees and a poison green snapback finish off the collection.
To celebrate this master collaboration, Vans and Haro teamed up to recreate the Freestyler Master in a limited run that will only be available in Vans.com, Vans Facebook and Vans retail store giveaways. Visit vans.com and facebook.com/vans through the month of July for more information.
The entire Vans x Haro collection hits stores July 1, 2013 and will be available at vans.com/haro.”

The Vans and Empire BMX Ruark Shoes
Vans has historically been tied to BMX and skateboarding, so it only makes sense that they would support one of the biggest companies in the industy. There’s no comp when it comes to Empire BMX. This is Texas after all. To commemorate general badassery, the guys designed the Empire BMX Ruark shoes to smoke bowls, dirt, street and parks alike.
Featuring a canvas upper, Vans BLC cupsole, Vanslite midsole for fewer bruised heels, the WaffleGrip outsole, and a vegan-friendly construction, the Ruarks are a large improvement from the standard, off-the-shelf Vans. I went up to see these in person yesterday and photographed them at the newly constructed Empire BMX bowl.
Pick these up at Empire BMX for $59.95
