Merckx Mondays

“Le Petite Cannibal”

I have a ton of Merckx Mondays content coming from Australia over these next few weeks but today I’ve got one piece of radness to share. This year, all my friends seem to be having kids and it’s no secret that FYXO‘s a daddy now. Hence the mini Molteni Baby Skinsuit.

$40 and guaranteed to make your offspring faster. Or something. Made to order, bespoke baby wear and ends this week, so get on it. This is one example when it’s acceptable to buy upgrades…

It’s Merckx Mondays (in the Northern Hemisphere anyway) and I’m back in the land of Eddy Merckx. Not Belgium, Melbourne. As far as I’m concerned, classic Eddy Merckx bicycles in Australia is pronounced “F Y X O”. Andy’s supplied the world with great photos of classic steel bicycles over the years and his new 7-FYXO kits are looking great. Pick up the 7-FYXO Jersey here and the FYXO classic bibs here.

Northside Wheelers and Shifter Bikes Open House

I fucking love Melbourne. It’s without a doubt, the best city in the world. The people, the bikes, the food. Everything about it is exceptional. Today was the open house at Northside Wheelers and Shifter Bikes. It was great to see old faces and new.

Tomorrow, we leave for a two day, 200 mile, 25,000′ ride over the dividing range on cross bikes, aka an Australian ass-whoopin’, so let these photos get you through the weekend!

Check out some narrated photos in the Gallery!

Hey, it’s been a while and when I come across something like this, I have to share it. Richard Pool designs and prints these portrait infographics of famous cyclists and the Eddy Merckx designs are so good.

Even though I have two awesome road bikes, part of me still misses riding my MX-Leader. Sure, they aren’t the lightest of bikes but they ride like none other. Even after parting with mine, I based both of my custom road bikes on its geometry. But this one’s got a history behind it. I rode this bike while I was in Australia last year and loved it. So when I saw Andy was parting with it, I got all pensive and contemplated buying it for a second.

This is one beautiful example of a non-team issue paint job on a stunning MX-Leader and FYXO is selling it now. If you ride a 58cm and have been looking for one, look no further. Check out his eBay auction here.

Photos by Andy White

I can’t even begin to think where Merckx Mondays would be without the assistance from Andy White from Fyxomatosis. The man probably buys a new Merckx frame every other week and when he builds it up, it’s pristine. Dura Ace was the kit of choice back in this era. Oh and having a model in a 7 Eleven kit is a lot nicer than propping the bike up with a stick!

I just got back from Portland after a long day of traveling, to come home to a wonderful Merckx Mondays post from Fyxomatosis. Head over and check out more of this custom, one-of-a-kind Eddy Merckx MX-Leader restoration!

This week, I’m bringing to you one of the best Eddy Merckx books I’ve ever had my hands on. Merckx 525 is a wonderfully compiled, hardback collection showcasing the Cannibal’s 525 career victories, from his first junior championships to his retirement in 1978. There are so many photos I’ve never seen before inside its cover that I could have just scanned them in and had Merckx Mondays content for well over a year.

Gage + DeSoto have this book in stock now and are offering free shipping to US PiNP readers by using the code PINP525 at checkout. Pick one up here! I shot some more photos of Merckx 525. Check them out as well.

David Lundqvist got ahold of a beautiful Stuttgart pista frameset and built it with all Campagnolo C-Record Pista. I am drooling right now. And no, that’s not my old frame. This one’s in much better condition. It’s been a while since a Merckx Mondays, but I thought this deserved one!

There’s one more gem below.

Fyxomatosis: E61 Mongoose Handle

Fyxomatosis: E61 Mongoose Handle

Espresso is a cyclist’s manna. I once heard someone say “so what does coffee have to do with cycling anyway?”. The E61 is one of the most famous espresso machines. Made by Faema, the team that sponsored Merckx in his early days, when he rode a De Rosa. So what does this have to do with a Mongoose grip on an E61 handle? Absolutely nothing. But it’s rad. Radness made by the Gonz in Melburn.

Follow @Gonzlab on Instagram for more intriguing creations and lots of bad grammar.

Thanks to FYXO for the photo!

As we were riding over to Eppy’s house, everyone kept telling me about his Merckx collection and a mural that Woof painted in his bike room. I had no idea what to expect, so imagine my surprise when I saw this Molteni painting staring me down as I entered this room. The joke of the afternoon was “there’s like 4 weeks worth of Merckx Mondays in there”…

Eppy’s SL Eddy Merckx Pista

Reportage

Eppy’s SL Eddy Merckx Pista

I was absolutely blown away at the number of Eddy Merckx bikes I saw while in Jakarta but the owner whose collection took the cake was Eppy. You’ll see more, later today in Merckx Mondays but for now, I wanted to showcase his immaculate Eddy Merckx SL Pista. I don’t know about you, but when I see a red Merckx Pista, I think of Andy’s MAX Merckx (which I don’t think I ever posted my photos of?). While SL is no MAX, this bike is strikingly beautiful. See more below.

Celebrate the Tour with Rapha’s 5 Decades T-Shirts

Reportage

Celebrate the Tour with Rapha’s 5 Decades T-Shirts

The Tour is in full swing and as with any great stage race, there are legends. Riders who have not only conquered the countryside and mountains once, but five or more times. It began in 1962 with Jacques Anquetil, then in 1972, Eddy Merckx, 1982, Bernard Hinault, 1992, Miguel Indurain and in 2002, Lance Armstrong. Rapha’s 5 Decades t-shirts celebrate these men and their accomplishments.

These high quality cotton tees celebrate 50 years, or 5 decades, of trade teams returning to the Tour. Each of the 5 colorways play tribute to the respected team liveries. These shirts are cut slim, with side panels and a dropped tail for a better cycling fit. While they are not jerseys, per se, they do have a back pocket and are quite comfortable.

Each shirt has a unique printed emblem, dates and other details representing each legend. You know, the kind of thing that Rapha is known for… They cost $60 each or $240.00 for all 5 shirts bundled in a limited edition mussette.
