Paul Component: Klamper Road and Cross Disc Brakes Coming Soon

“If disc brakes were meant for road and cross bikes, Paul would have made them…”

Truth is truth and I’ve seen the light. Literally. I have a set of these and unfortunately, I didn’t have time to put any miles on them yet but I can assure you, they look and feel amazing. Like all of Paul’s brakes, they’re machined and finished to the highest of standards.

You should know however, that Paul is marketing these for road and cross bikes only at the time being…

Expect a review once I get back to Austin and if you’re going to Interbike, roll through their booth 15030.

Avery County Cycles: 1×11 Disc Cross Bike

Josh Culbertson from Avery County Cycles recently completed a gorgeous 1×11 disc cross bike for a customer. Like a lot of Josh’s bikes, there’s a story behind this one. The client’s grandparents worked for and collected Viking Snowmobiles in northwestern Minnesota, so you’ll catch insignia from Viking on the bike, as well as a Viking-inspired paint job.

Made from True Temper with internal routing and painted by Jordan Low, this lightweight steel bike has a mean stance and will stop just fine in whatever conditions you throw at it. For wheels, King R45D to carbon hoops were spec’d and built by Magnetic Wheel Co.

Rapha and Giro Launch Cross Shoes

Wait a second, what’s this? That’s not a cross shoe?!

“Continuing the partnership in footwear with Giro, Rapha are launching our first cyclocross-specific shoe. Built on the EC90 carbon outsole used by Giro’s current range of MTB/Cross footwear, the upper of the shoe has been developed for the rigors of racing with a rubberized heel and toe-cap and aggressive outsole cleats for getting through the mud. Aesthetically clean and refined, the colors of Rapha Super Cross are woven into the shoe’s upper.”

Don’t miss out on the Rapha Cross Collection and see more of the actual shoes below!

Jonathan’s Falconer Cross

Reportage

Jonathan’s Falconer Cross

The grass is good and dead here in Austin. That means cyclocross season is nigh. Jonathan recently relocated from Omaha to Austin, at the height of the summer heat, to replace the wrench of my buddy Chris at Mellow Johnny’s.

Even though it’s well over 100 degrees here, Jonathan’s Falconer cross bike scorches the ground it traverses. This thing is molten lava and the paint even matches the dried, dead grass. I think this might be one of my favorite bikes I’ve shot this year.

Accent points are the Chris King Mango bits, orange PAUL Minimoto brakes and a nice sparkle clear coat. My favorite detail however are the seat stays and Solid’s tapered head tube to match the ENVE fork.

I can’t wait to see this thing at the races this season!

The cross bike, as many readers of this site have come to find, is an extremely flexible riding platform. Equip it with 23s and you are off racing crits, go the other way you are blasting trails, they dress up nicely as touring bikes, they are perfect “gravel grinders” –whatever that means, and here in the pacific northwest they are the go to model for a winter training bike, the ample brake clearance allowing full fenders to be easily installed…

All-City Cycles’ Nature Boy Disc Now in Reynolds 853

This bike has single-handedly upped the game for All-City Cycles in my opinion. You get everything the Nature Boy had, plus disc brakes, a Whisky fork, Anna’s fancy dropout design and Reynolds 853. All that for $1,200 frameset or $2,250 complete. Available in November of this year.

See more at All-City. Congrats guys, this bike looks great!

Having someone like Josh Hayes around your office is a valuable asset. With all the logistics, red tape, and TPS reports that can seem to work against getting shit done, sometimes you just need someone to call a situation out for what it is, and then promptly return to their computer to blast Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”.

Royal H Cycles: Bad Larry SSCX Bike for Sale

Yikes! This bike looks like a real ripper. Bryan from Royal H Cycles built up this exquisite singlespeed ‘cross bike for the Bike Cult show in NYC and it’s now available for sale. The price is $3500 as shown, with a 57cm seat tube and 56.5cm top tube (center to center). I think that’s a great price, especially for such a unique frame. I’m really loving the lugwork and paint detailing. See more at the Royal H Flickr.

Great work Bryan! If you’re interested, holler at Royal H Cycles.

Meandering in Kaua’i on a Cross Bike

Meandering in Kaua’i on a Cross Bike

All things considered, negotiating a bike as a piece of important luggage on a ‘vacation’ isn’t easy. The past few times we’ve gone to visit Lauren’s parents on Kaua’i, Hawaii, I’ve been so bummed to not have a bike with me.

Not that Kaua’i is a cycling destination, moreso because everything we’ve hiked here is totally bike friendly, aside from a few hike-a-bike moments up some mangrove forest or down a waterfall.

After taking two weeks off four our road trip, Lauren agreed to let me bring my cross bike. I argued that it’d offer me two or so hours a day of fitness, thus making me less restless during all the family time outings. Remember, Hawaii means ‘chill’ and sitting still is something I’ve programmed out of my daily repertoire. Must. Keep. Moving.
