Archive Re-Up: Chas’ Team TCB Low Bicycles Cross Bike

When we lost our 2015 image bucket back in 2018, it was a huge bummer, but over the past few months, I’ve been digging out hard drives and re-editing some photos, in the hopes of filling in the bigger holes. With this real winter we’ve been having, I’ve had a bit more free time to take a deep dive into the archives, and today, I’m sharing an iconic ‘cross bike from Low Bicycles, owned by Chas.

Check out the most recent Archive Re-Up: Chas’ Team TCB LOW ‘Cross Bike

I should also note that my intent here is only to upload lost photos, keeping the text and formatting intact.

Chas Christiansen’s Custom OPEN Upper Frames for Beyond Aero

Chas Christiansen offers up a unique hand-drawn doodle style of emblazing bicycle components. Over the years, he’s drawn on many things, from shoes, to disc wheels, and frames. The latter inspired his local shop, Beyond Aero to commission Chas to doodle on an OPEN Upper frame. Every nook and crevice is covered on this carbon steed. Check out a brief intro to the project by Chas below with photos supplied by Beyond Aero…

The NOTCHAS Scrawl Kit by Endo Customs

This whole project looks incredible and I love Chas’ explanation of the process.

“I had toyed with the idea of creating a kit for years, but I only work in analog, hand drawing at full scale, so the digital aspect of kit design always halted my efforts. Then Bobby from Endo Customs in LA reach out with a solution. He printed out the kit template full size and sent it my way, after 4 weeks, 11 paint pens, untold jammers and countless hours I sent back the template covered in my art. Here you have a hand drawn kit, expertly rendered into print by Endo customs! I don’t even remember all the little things hidden in this kit, surprises of stoke for years to come!”

You can pre-order this kit, made by Endo Customs in Los Angeles at the NOTCHAS Store.

Chas’ Doodled Cannondale Track

Chas has a number of these Cannondale track bikes that have been thrashed on the street over the years, resulting in some pretty heft beausage. Since this one in particular has a few dents, he decided to turn it into a doodle bike and sell the frameset, along with this hand painted disc wheel. Both are for sale now at his webshop, so head over to see more details.

Chas in San Francisco

Oakley followed Chas as he rips through SF on his brakeless track bike. Watching this guy ride is like watching a downhiller take on a World Cup. So smooth and in control at all times. Good stuff guys!

Chas’ Cinelli Mash Work Bike with Zipp Firecrest 404 Track Wheels

Chas’ Cinelli Mash Work Bike with Zipp Firecrest 404 Track Wheels

Chas’ Zipp Firecrest 404 Track Wheels
Photos by Kyle Kelley, words by John Watson

When Zipp announced their Firecrest track wheels in both the 404 (58mm deep) and an 808 (82mm deep) model, it was very apparent they were making wheels specific to the track criterium crowd, not the velodrome crowd. Track racers who invest in a set of Zipp’s would opt for the Firecrest 404 or 808 tubulars. The clincher Firecrests are clearly designed for the street use.

These new 404 Firecrest track wheels come in a 28h front / rear 2x lacing pattern, use a single-sided fixed asymmetric rear hub with a non-proprietary lock ring and rather than go for a 15mm bolt, Zipp chose a 6mm allen.

Chas has been racing on these wheels, which found their way onto the Cinelli Work frameset. A steel singlespeed frame that can be ran as a fixed crit bike, work bike or even a singlespeed ‘cross machine. Kyle caught up with Chas at the Wolf Pack Hustle Civic Center crit a few weeks back and loved the look of these wheels.

With the Red Hook Crit Barcelona underway this weekend, Chas, his bike and those wheels will go through a thorough amount of work and personally, I like how this bike is looking.

Zipp Firecrest 404:
58mm deep
1,655g wheelset weight
$950 front and $1,150 rear

Zipp Firecrest 808:
82mm deep
1,805g wheelset weight
$1,100 front and $1,300 rear

In stock now at Zipp.

Chas’ Team TCB LOW ‘Cross Bike

For SF’s TCB Courier, the busy summer months aren’t easy with all their deliveries yet the hustle and bustle of a day to day life of a bike messenger aids itself well for staying in shape. Especially come ‘cross season. This year, the team will be racing on the new LOW ‘cross frames. These frames are decorated with blue and orange paint, with each bottom bracket stamped with the racer’s name.

Chas’ Legor Cicli Track Bike

Reportage

Chas’ Legor Cicli Track Bike

In the world of beausage and bicycles, you’d be hard pressed to find a better catalyst than a street-racing track bike. Or even a bike messenger’s work horse. When you combine the two…

This Legor Cicli track bike was first featured here back in 2011 at NAHBS in Austin. Originally owned by John Taki and was just recently passed down to Chas, it’s seen its share of street wear and tear. Fit with Omnium cranks, a 44RN camo chainring and Essor wheels, it has the mean stance of a race machine, with a lot of that special pista patina we’ve all come to admire.

Chas was in London to do a panel with Oakley at their In Residence space, so in-between his busy schedule, I took this bike outside to document it. There’s something special about a track bike in a city like London… and I love it! Oh and that cup in the spokes? Chas didn’t want to litter when he finished his beer.

When in London

On the way back home from Italy, I swung through London to catch up with my friends at Oakley who have just opened their Oakley In Residence space. After a quick tour of the locale and a brief meet and greet with a few athletes, Chas from MASH and I convinced multi-Olympic gold medalist Victoria Pendleton to step outside and take a #HardstyleWednesday photo.

My mind is blown… As always, there’s more to come!

Mash SF: Chas on Battery Street

All I can think watching this (and after navigating the ever-increasing congested streets of SF last week) is… suckers! Chas steers no-handed with ease through a sea of sedentary car commuters who’d be better off riding bikes in the great city of SF. Nice one Mash!

Oakley: Chas Christiansen – One Obsession

Yes, Chas!

“What started off as a way to pay the rent in San Francisco, soon turned into a new way of life for Chas Christiansen. Messenger cycling opened up a world of opportunity and introduced Chas to an international community of like-minded people. Taking his bike everywhere that he goes, travelling the globe in search of new people, cultures and experiences.”

Nice one, Oakley.
