Precision at Scale: A Baum Cycles Factory Visit
Editing the photos from my visit to Baum Cycles this February, an eerie feeling came over me. I knew it’d been some time since I last took photos with the ‘big camera’ at 7 Seabright St, North Shore. For some reason, it felt like a precise period of time. My suspicion was confirmed. 10 years.

The Custom Gravel Beauties of the 2021 Chris King Open House: Baum, Bixxis, Legor, Prova, Victoire
For the past five years, we’ve hosted in-depth documentation of the annual Chris King Open House and for the second year in a row, this showcase has gone virtual. Yet, don’t fret, because we have a beautiful showcase of some incredibly talented, international builders for you today. With a catalog spanning the globe, ranging from Australia to Italy, Spain, and France, we’re bringing gravel offerings from Baum, Bixxis, Legor, Prova, and Victoire to the web for you to enjoy from the comfort of your home or office. These bikes feature an extremely limited run of grey and turquoise Chris King bits which won’t be available to the public but have informed the paint designs for each of these noble steeds.
I hope you’re ready for some delicious gravel bikes! Let’s jump right in…

Faded with BAUM
BAUM is known for precision bicycles but this paint job on their latest Orbis disc road is melting my eyes. See more of this beauty at the BAUM Flickr.

Above Category and the Baum Supremacy
No, this isn’t a espionage episode, it’s a look inside one of the world’s top titanium frame builders, located in Geelong, Australia. Above Category’s feature on Baum Cycles is worth the read and if you missed our own previous galleries, check those out on the left…

Above Category Looks at SRAM Red eTAP
Curious about eTAP? Above Category takes a look at SRAM’s new electronic shifting with three bikes, two of which are blowing my mind right now: a BAUM and a Mosaic. You’ve gotta head over to Above Category and see more photos. Or, check out some extensive shots below!

Above Category: Zio Ziegler-Painted BAUM Road
This one’s killing me right now. I love bikes where no matter how much you look at them, something new appears in the finishing every time. Take for instance this Baum, painted by artist Zio Ziegler, recently built by Above Category and featured on their Twelve Days of Breathtaking Builds. There’s a more in-depth feature on the way, but they didn’t hold back with the teaser images on their blog. Head to Above Category to see more!

Above Category’s Twelve Days of Breathtaking Builds
There are a lot of balleur bikes on this site, but Above Category takes it to another level. Right now, they have a series entitled “The Twelve Days of Breathtaking Builds” on their website and as you’d guess, there are tons of details to keep your interest piqued during this holiday season. Head on over and check out the first few bikes to be posted!

BAUM Cycles Tandemonium
Just in time for Halloween, this Baum Cycles Doppio tandem sure caught my attention. For whatever reason, tandems are everywhere I look these days. Take a look at more details on this beautiful bicycle at the Baum Flickr!

This Baum GTR MTB is Zesty
Light and refreshing like a mid-summer ride lemonade stand stop, this Baum GTR has all the accoutrement of a race-ready ripper while keeping it classy. I’m loving the added, classy wet paint to the Rock Shox RS-1. See more of this yellow and white beaut at the Baum Flickr.

Baum Cycles: Turquoise and Navy Ristretto
I look at Baum’s work like many people look at brands that are constantly introducing new “colorways” or styles. Nike, for instance. Or New Balance, rather. Same shoe, different color and yet it evokes a Pavlovian response. Seriously, how many times have we looked at a titanium Baum frame here on the site? They still get me every time. For more drool-worthy, Australian goodness, check the Baum Flickr.

Above Category: John Player Special inspired Baum Corretto
Everything in this photo represents the highest of high end: EE brake calipers, Lightweight Meilenstein Scharz edition wheels, on a JPS-inspired Baum Corretto frame. Head over to Above Category for more photos.

Above Category: Baum Turanti
There’s something so boss about an oversized titanium frame, especially with Baum‘s own unique selection. It looks like you can throw anything at it. Dirt rides down fire roads and cross races beware! This Turanti from Above Category fits the bill, right down to that blue paint and red anodized components. Check out more of this Bike of the Week at Above Category.

Baum Cycles: Custom Peace Paint Extensa
We’ve seen the road twin to this custom peace paint Baum Extensa before, but there’s something super rad about a pink mountain bike, especially with that build kit. See more at the Baum Flickr and even though I’m a metalhead, seeing peace signs on bikes is the best thing ever.

Baum Cycles: 2015 Rapha Tour Down Under Corretto Road
For the 2015 Tour Down Under, Baum Cycles cooked up something delicious for Rapha Australia. A titanium Corretto road with Campagnolo Super Record 11 and Lightweight wheels. Along with the signature Rapha color bands, the head badge has a unique inlay. The complete bike is sophisticated, yet sporty with one of the cleanest profiles I’ve seen from this pairing over the years. Personally, this is one of my favorite Baum and Rapha collaborations.

Baum Kills Their Touring Bicycle Department
It’s hard to not make a comment about Baum’s recent news of discontinuing their touring bike department, especially when they use this image as an example, which is a perfect segue into a dark place within the custom frame market…

Baum Cycles: Disc Cubano
Please, please, please, please, don’t make this another disc debate.
This is one of the best looking disc bikes I’ve seen and I have no idea why. Other than the fact that it’s a Baum and they seem to do no wrong. This Cubano is so amazing, down to the ENVE rims and minimal accents.
